Nikko broke my heart. He was lead through the regular sale at Kalona in November of 2021. The teenage girl leading him was sobbing. I knew that more than likely Nikko wasn’t going to make it long but I wanted to try. He was a 17 year old haflinger gelding that had been a kids horse his whole life. When he wasn’t sound enough to use anymore they brought him to a sale. I was guessing that he had foundered. After buying him I went ahead and gave him some pain medicine to make the 2.5 hour trailer ride home a little more bearable. Our vet examined him and we discovered that he had a subluxated coffin bone. There are surgeries that could possibly have helped but the probable outcomes weren’t good. I decided that it was in Nikko’s best interest to be euthanized. We fussed and loved on him for 6 days and then he was put to rest.
